ARCH462 : Project Development Process / Establishment of a Practice

This week lecturer who is Dr. Onur Yuncu explained us the general necessities of carrying out the practice of architectural experience in his offices that are Onur Yuncu Architecture.  The architectural practice necessity is registration of the office to the Chamber of Architects (Bureau Recognition Document). This process related with ‘Profession as we learnt previous lesson.

There are some requirements to organize a job. The basic necessities are an address where the business is located, a registration to Tax Office where you address is listed, a registration to SGK. Additionally, establishing as a corporation (anonym sirket), limited liability company (limited sirket), self-employed architect (serbest meslek erbabi) or an ordinary partnership (adi ortaklik)  is significant issue to indicate Tax Office what kind of foundation you established.

When we look the corporation companies (anonym sirket), registration belong to name of corporate body differently from belonging on one person. For one person registrations rather than corporation companies; office’s owner should be one architect. The beneficial part of this corporation company is that if a company (we can think an architecture office to relate it easily with our future life) faced with business collapse, only one of the partners became legally responsible with that situation, otherwise all other partners should be affected. Although, if the company or business will not be a long-term working, the best way will be the ordinary partnership. Since, it has less processes when we encounter the other ways.

Turkey has three kind of basic tax of practices that are VAT (KDV), Withholding Tax (Muhtasar) and Income Tax (Gelir Vergisi). It is a significant issue in order to understand and follow person’s income and expense. After arguing tax of practice, lecturer told about process of professional work. Offer is initial point for this step. The meaning of offer in this process is a price, contents of proposed work, working method, related works that are excluded, terms and conditions.

There is another must for the companies, that is registration to SGK like the registration for the tax offices. For this procedure, employees’ insurance should be registered to SSK and but self-employment should have registered their insurance to Bağkur. These are not the only requirements, there is last one; registration of the office to the Chamber of Architects for taking office registration certificate.

ARCH402 : Studies About Theme

a.jpg

According to my initial idea about themes, ‘War and Immigration’, ‘Imagination and Utopia’ themes take my attention. I will decide third theme after much more detailed research about two of them. The reason of choosing ‘War and Immigration’ is that Istanbul has significant history. It was center of the Ottoman and this city affected from lots of countries. If we look at the Istanbul throughout the history, there are too much cases and according to my idea about this issue, a museum should exhibit this historical process to visitors. Additionally not only Istanbul but also other cities have historical development because of war and immigrations during period of conflicts between countries. In this process, Ottoman’s military power has importance about army, air force, navy. That kind of museums can exhibit these materials too. On the other hand theme of ‘Imagination and Utopia’ can show ‘what if?!’ conditions about our country and also world.

UTOPIA

The word utopia was coined in 1516 by Thomas More from the Greek ou and topos, referring to the negation and to the place; utopia was literally nowhere. It was an island far away, on which an ideal society had developed, a perspective which owed a lot to the discovery of the New World.  The view prevailed until the eighteenth century. It was imagined that a traveler had visited this island, perhaps by accident, following a shipwreck for instance. Because utopian texts were usually written in the present tense, utopia was thought of as existing in the present, although in an unknown location. The view prevailed until the eighteenth century. It was imagined that a traveler had visited this island, perhaps by accident, following a shipwreck for instance. Because utopian texts were usually written in the present tense, utopia was thought of as existing in the present, although in an unknown location.

The relationship between architecture and utopia had now become symmetrical; not only did utopia borrow from architecture, but architecture itself was increasingly influenced by utopian perspectives. Thus utopia naturally led the quest for an organic architectural and urban expression that would fulfill both the material and spiritual requirements of the industrial age.

According to my first impression about this issue, I thought that the museum keeps pace with Yolcuzade Iskender Street. I mean, museum can start with street in the lower level and take people to the inside slowly. This initial part include both open and closed areas for exhibition. After these fragmented parts the museum can take backwards complex and total shape.

ARCH462 : Profession and Practice

This week, we had Assoc. Prof. Bilge İmamoğlu as our guest-lecturer for the topic of “Professionalism “. This lecture was about process of the phenomenon of “profession” and the “profession of architecture” in particular.

We focused on the terms of profession(n), professional(adj), professionalism(n), professionalization(n) and their dictionary meanings. ‘Profession(n)’ means ‘meslek’ in Turkish. The term of profession requires education, training and skills. The other one is that ‘professionalism(n)’ requires skill, polite behavior and good judgment. We debated the possible causes of the existence of “professionalism” rather than “professionality”. It means that professionalism is an “action” rather than a “condition”. ‘Professionalization’ is the process which is necessary to become professional.

After explanation of these words, he talked about how this being professional issue comes from. Every person should focus on a particular profession and improve himself at that field. It means that, when we think about the profession, everyone shouldn’t do any work. Everyone cannot be doctor, operate surgery or architect. For instance, being architect or doctor requires some skills. Education, training and skills provide to have ‘profession’. Because of this reason, being a cab driver is not a profession. It is an occupation. In order to achieve professionalization, which is related with enlightenment, industrialization and urbanization, there are some steps that are educational institutions, publication of professional journals and exhibitions, etc.

Lastly, the evolution of professionalization was discussed in Turkey. Mühendishane-i Bahri Hümayun which is the first technical school opened in 1782. Chronologically; Mekteb-i Berri Hümayun (1795), Mekteb-i Mülkiye (1859), Mekteb-i Sanayi-i Nefise-i Şahane (1882), Hendese-i Mülkiye (1884) and Dar-ül Fünün (1845) was opened. These transformations were mainly western oriented. Afterwards; ITU, METU, KTU and EAU increased quality in education with the proclamation of the republic.

Although some might find the Rijksmuseum looks a lot like a Catholic church, the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum was built as a museum. The architect was Pierre Cuypers, a man who created many Catholic churches all over The Netherlands. Cuypers also created the Amsterdam Central Station, you might find they look very similar.

The Rijksmuseum was opened in 1885. But many people were not happy with the result, because it looked old-fashioned and like a Catholic church. The Amsterdam elite was protestant, as was king William III. He said: ‘I will not set foot in that monastery’. He refused to lay the first brick and to perform the opening.

The Rijksmuseum building, outside and inside, is decorated in detail with tile pictures, stained-glass windows, sculptures, mosaic floors and wall paintings. Many of the images depict scenes of important events from Dutch history.

One of the most impressive parts of the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum is the library. It’s called Cuypers library. You can really notice the neo-gothic and neo-renaissance style that Pierre Cuypers, the architect loved so much.

Map of the groundfloor of the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum. The passage ( goes straight through the middle, passing over the wardrode, the toilets, the ticket office and an underpass to get from one atrium to the other.

The Atrium can be accessed from the passageway, which features glass walls through which passersby can admire the view of the courtyards. The Atrium features large glass-covered roofs and pale polished Portuguese stone floors that reflect the natural light, making the voluminous courtyard spaces feel airy and bright.

Every summer the Rijksmuseum garden turns into a sculpture exhibit. For exampleone of years’ works are by Jean Dubuffet and from the Stedelijk Museum’s collection. The sculptures are bold, colourful, playful perfect for summer. It is a temporary situation.
